    So far works out about 4%

    NS&I index linked - 10.25% gross for higher rate taxpayers, so the ad says at the moment ( http://www.nsandi.com/products/ilsc/index.jsp ), probably unbeatable at the moment if you are happy to tuck it away. Even better than 'boomed' house prices !

    They are not really tax free either. The rate of return relative to commercial deposits has been reduced to more than make up for the tax. Like everything from government, a total fraud.
