Personally, I think that travelling in class based carriages is unegalitarian and snobbish. All classes should be the same with the same fares throughout. It goes without saying that an overcrowded pleb class should be taking up free seats in the other carriages currently paid for by the few elite who can afford a higher price.

Surely the problems is not with first class passengers?

The passengers should be entitled to a seat regardless of price.

Then first class passengers would then only be paying for a nicer seat and possibly a table & free refreshments.

Of course due to decades of underinvestment there aren't enough seats to go around. That is the problem not those who pay extra to assure they get a seat to get some work done.

Think a comparison between Travelodge & the Hilton.
