That's because we all know that is what people vote for. Not shrill right-wingers, or gobby lefties, but something perceived as soft and cuddly in the middle.

But while NL spin themselves as business-friendly, family-friendly, and all the rest, underneath it hasn't stopped them carrying out traditional socialist policies.

Cameron's tories will also spin themselves as business-friendly, family-friendly, and all the rest, while underneath carrying out traditional tory policies.

This is a good point. Let's assume they get elected - a couple of years down the line, if not sooner, a few of Brown's skeletons will emerge from the closet and it will look like it's the Tories fault. No-one wants to hear the message that NuLab used to trot out all the time 'it was the other lot's fault' - so the Tories will have think carefully about what they do and how they communicate it.

My own preference would be a refreshingly spin-free 'this is the extent of the problem and this is what we are planning to do to fix it.'

Alternatively, build our own island out in international waters. Just need to encourage one of those undersea volcanoes to become more active and voila, instant UK haven. Would have some nice fancy under-floor heating as well. Perfect. Let's do it.

We could just free the UK Fridge mountain 12 miles offshore and found the new democratic republic of Indesit.

Alternatively we could move to the mid Atlantic and build a small continent based on New Labour press releases that were untruthful, should get something the size of Africa. OK we might have to use some of the spare releases to build a 12 lane bridge between the UK & US.
