thanks for the input
validated my thoughts - Gas is just an easy cop out. Stick with the coal.
GreenEgg is the bees knees but a bit above my station at the moment.

My step daughter got me this for xmas: Fire and smoke it's very good (if a little hipster) even for a seasoned BBQer

Totally, agree with this. And good charcoal makes a big difference to the taste of the food.Originally posted by sal View PostHalf of the flavour of the BBQ comes from the charcoal.
If you are going for gas, might as well just buy a grill pan and use the cooker.
If your main reason for going gas is the ease of starting it, Weber have charcoal models with small gas cartridge used to start the BBQ.
My only advice because I'm really just a novice bbq man, is get this book. It's amazing how cooking food correctly makes a huge difference to the taste

Real contractors have a gas barbecue to assist in lighting their charcoal barbecue.

I want one of these. Best of both worlds - a normal kettle BBQ and a proper smoker, where the smoke goes up and smokes the meat

Gas all the way IF you remember to put the lava rocks in it......then your food is being cooked by the hot rocks and not the gas flame.

Get yourself one of these.

They really are amazingly versatile - for low and slow cooks, grilling, smoking, pizzas etc. IMO theres no single option on the market which beats it at all of these things.
Surprisingly easy to light and control the temperature. I've had mine run 14 hours on a slow smoke on a single load.
The last 2 Christmas turkeys have been amazing.
It should last you a lifetime - easy.
I wouldn't live without one anymore.

Having used a couple for the first time in a park, I'm inclined to agree. Very convenient and last for ages. However, at home I have a smoker that looks like a steam engine.Originally posted by original PM View PostDisposable all the way.

It has a little bucket at the end to catch the fat. Which MF buys off me for his own consumption.
