You will be hard pressed to find any transatlantic flight that flies over Northwest Scotland, almost all of them fly over Wales and then Ireland. I would have though it wouldn't be a major detour to head over France and then towards Ireland.

It'll be like apartheid times when SAA weren't allowed to fly over Africa but had to go the coastal route which is why we always flew BOAC So British carriers will have fly all around Europe to get to Africa/Asia/etc and European carriers just over France onto Ireland to get to the USA...

Ok, not over NW Scotland directly but I was referring to a general direction of travel. What you can't see on that 2D map is the effect of the earth sphere, that's why they seem to go up and down following a great circle. To fly from Amsterdam all the way to Brittany and then start going north is a long way compared to flying straight over blighty.

These take advantage of great circle navigation and for eastbound flights the Jet stream. If the north most corridor has to skirt the channel the south most will be down at the Pyrenees. This is a major, time consuming, and costly diversion. (Gibbon in I used to work at NATs mode.)

Preventing UK airlines from landing at EU airports is not the same as blocking their airspace, but if the UK responded by blocking its airspace it would be a mild inconvenience for the EU, as flights could easily be diverted over France, however if the EU blocked its airspace, it would be a major hindrance for UK airlines to being able to fly East.

The tourism in the South increase a lot this year and we have more security checks, further more, the UK does not belong to the Schengen space, so stop moaning a get a life...

Sadly, the UK will just play fair and not introduce just as strict border controls for those from the schrengen area.

They use dental records, tattoos and foot prints to work out who survived, then repatriate the remains to the persons place of address.

Survivors can probably tell you who they are.

Is UK airspace only UK airspace or do with do stuff with Eire due to NI?

For example say a flight from New York sets off but realises they have an emergency before they land in Berlin in so stops on the Irish landmass. Can they stop in Belfast or does it have to be Dublin?*

*Please note I don't have a globe in front of me so can't work out the exact path.
