    This is very sound thinking.

Furthermore, being willing to walk away is just good tactics. If we come across as desperate for a deal at any cost, we will never win any concessions.

Showing the EU we mean business makes a good deal more likely. Ending the influence of the European Court of Justice has to be a red line for the Government.

If the EU refuses to accept this, what else can our negotiators do but walk away?
We know from the balance of trade between UK and EU27 that the EU needs the UK more than the other way round, so the UK can just walk away and then wait until the EU comes begging.

However, both the Irish and UK governments as well as EU representatives, have stated that they do not wish for a hard border in Ireland, taking into account the historical and social “sensitivities” that permeate the island.[18] In September 2016 the British Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union, David Davis, stated that the UK government would not seek a return to a "hard border" between the UK and Republic of Ireland.[19]

Both governments will try to prioritize the protection of an open border between the Republic and Northern Ireland and the retention of the Common Travel Area

    Chicken-Gate

Professor Tim Lang, who co-authored a briefing paper on Brexit and food, said the UK would have less power to stand up to the US after it leaves the Brussels bloc.

His comments come as a row broke out over whether chlorine washed chicken could be sold in the UK in order to secure a quick trade agreement with the US.

Speaking on PM on BBC Radio 4, Professor Lang said there was “a little whiff of panic” within the Government as it realised the “enormity of Brexit”.

He added leaving the EU would put Britain in a “weak position” and as a result ministers were trying to “pull a rabbit out of the hat” to do a trade deal with the US.

Maybe ban the sale of weapons to Saudi?
Maybe work towards stopping the fighting in places like Syria?
