Maybe the proper way to play chords is any way that sounds 'right'.
I used to play a bit but I certainly don't miss any of the knuckle crunchers. Now just the odd bit of help to the kids.

Serious answer:
If I'm trying to play properly I'll use the E and A shape barre chords. But mostly I'm lazy and use my thumb, which is okay for the E shapes but with the A shapes, although I can reach the A string with my thumb (which many people can't), I can't avoid muting the top E string. But my guitar playing has been strictly arsing about for many years now. If I ever had to play with people I'd have a shock and have to learn to do it properly again.
None of the people in the Raw Sex video are known for chords anyway. Who idolises Guitar George*. I'd much rather continue to fail to be Ritchie Blackmore.
*"Check out Guitar George. He knows all the chords. He's strictly rhythm he doesn't want to make it cry and sing".Last edited by VectraMan; 23 May 2017, 08:24.

This is all very well, but what's the best way to lay down 12 bar blues on a mandolin?
