Do you keep your mango chutney in the fridge?

Mango chutney should be eaten in one sitting, not stored in the fridge

Further to that I'm wondering whether he has some kind of arrangement that allows the spoon to be stored within the pot itself

No equipment is needed, just lick it clean and stick the spoon back in.

Obviously people on here all have huge kitchens with plenty of larder space, range cookers, and walk in fridges though.

The more space you have the more crap you fill it with resulting in the only space left to put food in is in the fridge.

But why would you put jam in a fridge?

It's all sugar. The only thing that can spoil it is mould & putting stuff in a fridge doesn't protect against mould. The spores get in there potentially every time you open the jar & most moulds can proliferate at the temperatures found in a fridge.

The jar of jam I have the moment states once open keep in the fridge and consume within 6 weeks. The jam has been open for about 2 months in the fridge with no obvious mould on it.

Plus if the jam has loads of fruit in it the fruit bits taste nicer cold when you dig them out with a teaspoon.

Mould explodes in the warmth. The main problem of chilling jam is it makes your toast cold.

As mentioned, people used to have colder houses. They also used to have pantries/larders which are a great way to keep semi-perishable foods fresh.
