Regardless of what voting is about or at what level of government is involved I just strike through all existing options, write "Adolph" and put a cross by it.

I suppose anything is possible however I do clearly recall thinking at the time "Oh they've got pencils this time" before seeing anyone else talk about it.
Fair enough. I've just never heard of pens in a polling booth.
The Electoral Commission has welcomed people bringing a pen and said that observers watch counts to ensure that they are kept secure. Campaigners from both sides have been invited to proceedings to ensure that they are not being tampered with.
“By tradition, pencils are available in polling booths for voters to mark their ballot papers,” a spokesperson said. “If a voter wishes to bring their own pen and use that, it's fine.”
But isn't it at least possible? The mind can play funny tricks.

Is it possible that at the GE and London mayor elections they had pencils, but you have convinced yourself that they had pens because of your suspicion that there is a conspiracy to rig the referendum?
No as I thought to myself it was funny they has a pencil this time - then thought nothing of it until I saw people talking about it online
