It interesting to see that the figure has now dropped from 1000 then down to 80 and now down to a group of around 40 men. These were originally described as refugees and asylum seekers but have now been identified as possible North Africans (not Arabs as much of the press has reported nor Muslims as they were all drunk) who were French speakers (could have come from Belgium which is close to Köln) and didn't have papers. Much of the problems happened between 2 platforms so I don't think that there were around 1000 people there somehow but the press does like to whip up a nationalistic frenzy though. I had friends who were up there who said that the main problem was a lot of drunken people, some 2000 in all, of all races in front of the station throwing fireworks making it very dangerous.

I personally wasn't very far away over in Essen and the scariest thing I saw was the group of Arabic men standing at the Trinkhalle next to the doorway of the club I was in drinking beer having gout out of a car with Belgian plates. Also a young girl, 23 years old, left the club in the early hours of the morning and was run over and killed by a police car.

Between 500 and 1,000 men described as drunk and aggressive are believed to have been behind the attacks on partygoers in the centre of the western German city. Whether they were working as a single group or in separate gangs remains unclear.
