I was given a 5 day course as a 21st birthday present - it was good fun but the day of the test I bottled it and failed
Taught me useful road skills and an understanding of the issues truckers have with other road users
I kept meaning to retake it over the years but never got around to it - pretty sure you can't go straight to 44 tonners like you could in those days - but think you now have to start at 7.5 tonnes and work up through the classes - which the more cynical amongst us (i.e. me) suspect is a revenue generating thing for HMG
Only good news is the automatic granting of the rights to drive 7.5 tonners to oldies like me - which has been useful in house moves over the years
As others have said the pay doesn't appear to be brilliant and if ever an industry has been dicked around endlessly by bureaucrats the transport would top the list - the latest wheeze is the CPC (Driver Certificate of Professional Competence) requirement - forcing drivers with years of experience to go back to the classroom and get basic formalised training (at a cost) and a mandatory licence - reading about it a lot in the press of the guys voting with their feet and leaving the industry

Don't jokea few years ago and a few miles from here a lorry driver strangled his step-daughter after molesting her, then hanged himself.

But it's a pipe dream of mine I get every time I watch Ice Road Truckers.
Wouldn't fancy it in this country though. It'd be like being stuck in one long traffic jam.

FTFY
You're expected to provide your own egg-crusted string vest, amphetamines, dodgy driving "skills" and dead hookers.
