It was her inheritance from my great grandfather - so the government already got their 40% once. His dad was harbour master at Hull, and founded a chain of shops selling clothing and equipment for the shipping industry. The various shares were bought after the business was sold (no sons to carry on the business ). There is a still a shop in Hull selling protective equipment in the same name.

Sadly not, which is why Osbourne did the U-turn on tax credits. I did mention it - but my mother and aunt are also fairly elderly and so find things like saving tax rather scary. Funny thing is, they're gifting it now - but only because they want us grandchildren to have more from our Nan. I'm very happy for the two of them to speed spend it all, but I doubt they will... given the longevity of the family I guess I'll just have to wait.

My Grandmother died in May - age 101. Her two daughters had poa from 2006. Their first action was to sell all the shares (worth just over £1M), just before the Credit Crunch.
