To be fair, the British government often complains to S.A. about the treatment of natives under their criminal "justice" system.
Generally, I understand, the S.A. authorities turn a blind eye to alcohol for personal consumption, which implies he's done something else to incur their wrath. Such as making wine and selling it.
I heard that too. I reckon there's something else to it.

Unbelievable that the UK is trying to interfere in the affairs of another country.
Just because he is a UK citizen, what gives him the right to break the laws of another country.
If the UK really objects to how Saudi treats its prisoners then appeal on behalf of all citizens - not just the UK ones. And if that does not work then cut off trading links.
He's done his year in prison. This is something on top that they weren't originally (allegedly) advised about.
