I had no great challenge to understand the thread meaning, the literacy of the poster on the other hand meant I had to down shift my brain to the level of a 6 year old though.

The sensible answer to the original question is how is your appetite for long payment terms and risk of non payment? If the terms being offered aren't palatable then either negotiate better ones or walk away. Not complicated and really if you struggle to understand that without help then are you certain contracting is a great idea?

    that's not very charitable

Mind you, it only takes a few milliseconds to figure out that GP strategies must be some kind of agency, consultancy and/or client. Perhaps TykeMerc's title should be "Sockiophobe".

Ten weeks to get paid is a lot for a noob living hand to mouth, but no problem for an old sweat with no bills and who plays golf with the MD.

It's not an easy one to answer. Also, anyone who has been burned will be even more risk averse.

If every crook who came down the pike had a big sign on their 'ead, or if burglers only came round on Wednesdays, life would be a lot easier.

so no, I know nothing about gp strategies , fwiw, and that is very little.

Anyway as some one who works direct and through agencies - agency payment terms are often shorter because most (but not all) do invoice factoring and pay you before they get paid from the client.

If you work direct company payment terms vary from 21 to 120 days in arrears.

It's worth getting to know people who work in other industries who deal with payments and invoicing with various companies as they will tell you some of the tricks companies get up to to avoid paying invoices.

Very well known large companies often decide not to pay on time as forcing you to give them more credit with other suppliers means more money for them. On the other hand some smaller companies try other tactics not to pay on time either because they don't have the money due to a larger company not paying them, or they think they are emulating successful larger companies when they are just being crooks.

Anyway if payment terms are over 30 days and you see bad publicity about the company over payments even though they are creditworthy, then that's an indication that you will have to fight to get your invoices paid.
