They don't need to do them.

If they want graduates they have teams that target universities - in fact many universities now contact companies and invite them to advertise.

If they want experienced people they do the silicon roundabout or badly use the internet. I only know a few companies who successfully use the internet.

That's exactly how I got my start in IT in '86. And with Logica.

    How the years fly...

When I was permie, I used to do the graduate recruitment fairs around the country to try and sell the idea of coming to work for us.

It absolutely was not so that I could try (in vain, I should add) to chat up student totty.

I've done a bit of Googling, but all I can find is a job fair for start-ups, and a whole load for recent graduates.

I guess the internet/outsourcing might have made job fairs obsolete. But it seems like they'd be good places to find jobs with mid-level companies without having to go through agencies.

The job fairs were something agencies used as beauty parades. They were usually organised by agency bosses who were suffering badly through a depressed market. Most people had about as much use for them as they had for a square wheel, so they died out.

I was recently invited to an IT job fair for so called "Internationals" (Dutch polite term for foreigners) in Eindhoven, guess what? organized by a temp agency.

I think it's just an event to fish for references and contacts.
