Ah, the diplomatic way of saying "FFS, stop whining and don't bother extending next time, ergo saving the rest of us from the continuation of the Great Stand-Off Saga"

Personally I would go for the benched option as it might teach them something.
99.99% sure I won't be benched in 4 days - unless voluntarily. Also, 99.9% sure we'll get to the end of April and, suddenly realise they're plan is all pie in the sky. Whether at this point they'll take a sensible look or again try the old one month - who knows?

The reality of the situation is that there is TONS of work still ongoing. Also, its fairly niche and there is NO-ONE who can do the work within the client.

Not much around, unfortunately, otherwise I would have jumped by now. Chances are I will have to play their little game for the next month at least. Money is money at the end of the day.

Wife is pregnant, due July, so now is not the best time to be benched to be honest. Although, she also been in and out of hospital so neither is it good time to be working away from home.

Sometimes I must admit, I dont see the point of PMs.
They are there to do the stuff the architecture and dev teams don't care about (oh and getting chewed for not planning things properly... )

To be fair there is a world of difference between good PM's and bad ones. The good guys keep the team steady ensure PO's for equipment happen and see the ship straight even when the business finds out that they are burning a years cash in three months just to do the same job.

The bad ones make you feel like taking up mine disposal as an easier job

Found out today that this one month idea seems to come from PMs project plan. PM seems to have decided that project x will take x days and project y will take y days. And, as such, both will be done before end of April.

All calculated without even asking me what work is involved, without even considering other work, from a person who has limited technical knowledge. Then, it appears that someone higher up has looked at this, seen that all of the work is being done in April, and eyes have lit up at the chance of not having to pay for a contractor after April.

I think I want to be a PM. It seems all the job involves is making up dates, putting them on a spreadsheet, and then giving people hassle when its all not done by the date in question....

    Defies belief sometimes...

PM might look like a good idea but they are paid less than half what the architecture team does and get to have their arse chewed every time it emerges that they can't plan for toffee... So actually what you need to do is to learn bulltulip properly and start April as a Technical Architect with infrastructure and O/S stacks as your prime specialty...

    Yeh. Probably will do that.

Agent phoned me 3 times today for an answer. Client is hassling them saying they need to sort things out asap and I need to let them know. Yeh right thanks for that.

Its got to worth dragging out for a few days at least so I can see if there is anything else out there. Got a few leads to follow up on.

Mine runs out in two days. Should be another month on offer, but awaiting final approval, and the big boss lady goes on holiday this weekend.

Phone interview today for something else, though, and find out next week.

Had a chat with the manager guy here who's a top fella - hes pulling his hair out because he's the one at the sharp end who has to get the work done and some bean counter further up the chain is saying they dont need people! But he seems to have little sway in how the budget is spent....

Not wanting to look a gift horse in the mouth - a month is a month in this current climate and its close to home etc. but its got to stop somewhere.....

Full scale CV launch for the next week or two and we'll see if anything else pans out I guess. Chances are client will get a bit narky shortly - they seem to think they can wait till 2 weeks out, drop a month on me, then expect a decision on the spot.

And before anyone says, yes its contracting, thats the game, but sometimes I think this behaviour is just a little unnecessary....

    No question. No argument.

You are now on the market. WAKE UP!

Unless you fancy sitting on your backside till next April (new budgets) you need to be actively on the market.

Or you can ignore the advice and wait....
Or open two threads to moan about it... oh wait...
