There has been a few glimmers of recovery over the past month, Barclays Retail and IBM are mopping up a load of Middleware admin contractors (WAS/MQ/Connect Direct) for Knutsford.
But it's a very conservative market in the UK at the moment, everybody is holding on to roles if they can even though there has been a load of ATB rate cuts.

If I were you I'd stick it out in Australia, unless you're really flexible about where you can work in the UK/Europe. There is a shortage in Middleware/Architecture skills (or so I've been told by several different agents).

State of contract architecture market in london

    Hi Isf8hat

Yes I'm a generalist. I have done infrastructure, Application, Data, and Business Process in the past. Jobserve is a good place to start but I tend to find agents dont advertise the really good jobs. There are a couple of agencies that specialise in Architecture roles but they can be quite precious and the whole process can be far to much effort.

Wha kind of architecture work do you do. Are you a generalist or are you skills specific to a certain technology? Am a bit worried I'm going to invest all the time and effort moving back and then struggle to get work? I presume the best place to look,is still jobserve. Do you know any architecture specific recruitment agencies who only recruit architects? Is there any value in approaching them first?

There are loads of infrastructure architect contract roles going. I dont really understand what a data architect is, is it similar? (I should know this stuff really)

I made the move from permie to contract in February and got a Solution Architect role in London within a couple of weeks of leaving my permie job. I'm also still getting calls for other contracts so it seems to not be too bad at the moment.

Yes I did but it didn't really answer my question hence my post. There seems to be a handful of architecture roles available on a contract basis. I find that staggering for a city the size of London. Might have to pitch myself at other roles if I can't get something in the architecture space.

    Cheers

The entire London are for architect roles... that is specific? I know what you mean but the whole style of question doesn't really lend its self to a specific answer so thought the 3 pager may have given him a general insight as well.

Dire is about right. I have architect friends and unless you know someone who can guarantee you a job budget for 6-12 months looking for a role.
