In this case, is it legal or illegal to work without registering to an umbrella company during that time?
No, nothing illegal about it, it is a bit of an irregular way to do it. Next time get your contract signed and reviewed before you do the work or you may end up in a dispute that is difficult to resolve without a formal contract and may not even get paid.
Most clients won't take you on as self-employed because if you don't pay your tax then they may become liable for it so that's why you had to go umbrella.
I used to work permanent (full-time) and then the company made me redundant.
After jobless 2-3 months I got an offer from a start-up company for some IT design work.
We worked together like 2 months. I wait for my payment like 1 month extra and when they I told me that they are going to pay, I got registered to an umbrella company and got my payment through them.
At the end I payed my tax and NI through the umbrella company and got the rest as my net.
In this case, is it legal or illegal to work without registering to an umbrella company during that time?
Thanks
J.
I'd have worked as a sole trader, going via umbrella when there's no need has cost you a fair bit in tax and NI
