Looks likely I will be offered a 3 month extension at my current gig with authorisation to work from home 1-2 days a week. Gigs in London are paying up to an additional £150 a day (outside of investment banking/hedge funds) but I don't think that is worth sacrificing for what I have now in terms of relaxed working environment/flexibility and being able to work from home.

Went to uni there, worked there for 6 years after that. Moved out and really dont want to go back apart from visiting or maybe for a 6 month gig at most.

It's a long day if the jobs challenging but if (depending on the job) you could negotiate some of the train journey as part of your working day then it helps. I've managed to negotiate this in the past and the train journey is a good time to get through emails etc.

And I guess the other consideration is... how long can you hold out for a job in the NW should you give this opportunity up.

Why don't you come in on Sunday night, stay overnight at a B&B a few metres from the office, and go home for the weekend on Friday night?

Not currently of use to commuters, but Crossrail will make parts of west (and east) London far more accesible to commuters.

Crossrail will be interesting, Reading right through to Canary Wharf.

Not read all the post so this may have been covered:

Bloke here travels from Stockport everyday. Because he works on the train, he is allowed to work slightly shorter days. He still gets in around 0930 but gets the 1730 ish train home. With the drive and waiting, plus walk to tube and tube journey, I think he is out of the house 13 -14 hours.

Not sustainable I don't think if you had to do a 'real' 8-10 hour day at work and then add travel on top.

Some of us do do the real working day and then have a 2 hour commute home, but that is our choice. I could stay in London but at least I have a few hours at home and my own bed. Not great, but at least I'm not stuck in a city centre hotel bored.

Transport links to and from London by rail are improving but you go where the work is and for some of us the work is only in London unfortunately.

If the rate wouldnt support that then why would you consider work so far away?

I have commuted to London from Manchester on a weekly basis and I got my virgin traveler club thingy, so in effect I got 1st class return weekly for free.

Daily though? No way.

Anyway i thought you were inundated with contracts in your local area?
