I bill one extra day for each week I'm available for call-out. If I'm called, it's 2 hours minimum.
If I get called out when I'm not being paid to be on call-out then I bill them as if I'd been on call for that week (1 day's pay) plus time worked (2 hours minimum). It stops them taking the piss by calling me out but not having to pay me to be available.

CM's setup seems pretty sensible especially if actual callouts are billed up to the nearest hour, including travel time. Only thing... what agreement in terms of how quickly you can respond? e.g same-day is one thing, dropping everything immediately is another as it affects your ability to take other contracts.

Years ago the contractors at IR used to have a rule that if they got called out, they could charge a minimum time for the call out. Can't remember what it was, but somewhere in the region of 2-4 hours. Even if the call out was actually only a 5 min phone call where they could answer the question over the phone.
This was due to the fact that the T&Cs were based on the civil servants T&Cs when they were subsumed into the client by TUPE.
It must be common across the public sector because there's been stories in the press about Police doing similar things with respect to overtime.

The bank should already have a rule on how much they pay people to be on-call. The permie rate may well differ from the contractor rate, or if you're a specialist then perhaps you could quote them whatever you like.
We get paid 10% of our daily rate to be on-call Mon-Fri, and 20% Sat & Sun. Call-outs are then charged at our usual hourly rate.

Out of hours standby
This is a question aimed at anyone who provides out of hours support and charges a standby rate? What is your hourly rate as a percentage of your normal rate for standby and what do you charge if you have to actually do some work.
I'm being asked to do some for a secure banking web portal and just wondering what the going rate is percentage-wise.Tags: None
