I just had to reply to this after reading it. You sound like the biggest bunch of pathetic, whinging, nasty trolls. It is no wonder you were out of work, companies don't like to keep people who can't get along with others. I hope you are still unemployed. The person asking the question was polite and courteous and all the responses were completely out of order.

No skill shortage here in Oz for IT workers - Consulting companies find it more cost effective to import skills than retrain available workers - sound familiar?

Cultural vaccum? How lucky we are to receive example of Great Brit culture like 'Midsomer Murders', 'The Bill', etc... revenge for Oz soaps I suppose...

I'm sure, if you can find a legal and ethical way of working in the UK, no-one will wish you ill.

Friendly is a very strong word in this case No matter though. I do understand their frustrations and their position. It's not always the easier thing to be a contractor and you do carry more risk than a permie. The cool thing is that you tend to earn more than a permie when you have a job. I'm sure the UK market will pick up again this year and when it does most of these guys will probably smile again, until then they'll be grumpy and unfriendly and in all just contracting type personalities.

Anyway the advice and answers they gave is valid and I am taking that into consideration and it does open my eyes a bit on the true unadvertised reality in the UK.

Unfortunately I'm over 28. It's fine though. I have a few interviews next week with some of the financial institutions in the UK for a permie roles where they're willing to do the sponsorship for me when I'm successful. So, if everything goes according to plan then I'll still be in the UK soon albeit not as a contractor... At least I'll then be able to move into contracting when these guys have work again and the market is back to what it should be.

    Hey Guys,

I probably deserved all the responses from you guys currently sitting in the middle of it. It's easy to be naive when you're not in the country and don't completely understand all the laws because the mumbo jumbo you read on the internet is riddled with terms that can only be understood by someone that has a law degree and even some of those guys would have to reference those 2000 page books you usually see behind their desks So I do apologize for my naivety as well as my ignorance to the current situation in the UK.

I do have to say though that this is one of the reasons why I came to a site dedicated to contractors in the UK to ask questions. If you don't ask the people in that market you'll only be fed the bull that the agents and the news tell you and as we all know they don't always tell the truth or give the full story

If what Bite is doing is illegal, and I can believe that this is true, then I'll find another way. I'm not looking to break the law in a country to which I want to move on a permanent basis. At least there are a number of ways to get into the country and I would rather follow the correct procedures than try and find a back door that could be frowned upon.

Once again I do apologize for not understanding what you guys are going through at the moment.

Just for interest sake the thread I was talking about is:

The BITE Consulting Group will apply for workpermits for existing consultants on 2 year holiday working visa's or may have a client willing to do so.
To find work is not easy nor is it difficult if approached it the right way. Most people develop six week memory loss when talking to their friends forgetting the battle to get established when first arriving.BITE consulting has established a service to market potential candidates out to the vast amount of organisations in the UK and can help ensure they launch their IT Contracting career in the UK.WE WOULD EXPECT TO GET MOST PEOPLE A CONTRACT POSITION WITHIN 3 WEEKS OF ARRIVAL!They do this by MARKETING YOUR CV after checking its suitability for the uk market where the majority of cv's are scanned electronically for suitability before if ever being read. They also induct and train you into the UK market so you know your rate and how to promote the interest in you managing your contract to ensure you it works for you.Another benifit is you need to have a suitable limited company for your needs that does not breach the visa regulations and minimises the tax you legally pay.Matching this is part of the service and will become even more important as the tax laws change in March 2007 for contractors using managed service limited companies or composite limited companies.
I HOPE THIS HELPS YOU CAN FIND LOTS OF INFORMATION ON THE BITE SITE.
www.biteconsulting.co.uk or alternatively www.getaukjob.co.uk which carries some good job and visa links.

"Many people don't realise that the Immigration policy in the UK appears to be tightening as a result of political pressure based on general public opinion. As a result the requirements to gain a Highly skilled migrant visa or a work permit are and have been revised and a limitation just before at the last election reducing the work entitlement to 1 year for 2 year holiday working visa holders. This has made it more difficult for people to either obtain, re-new or maximize the use of their work entitlement of their respective visas.BITE Consulting can assist prospective employees in the IT industry to gain a suitable visa. They will assist suitable candidates through providing active support and advice and recommend them to an established solicitor where a 10% discount is obtained if necessary. Do you know any one who is an IT CONTRACTOR AND NEEDS VISA SUPPORT SERVICES?Are you or your friends finding it harder to gain work visa? What is the perception back home is this going to stop people travel? Please let me know your experiences or views."
