Wish to reiterate the point made earlier, don't worry about how many other people apply for a role just make sure your CV is well written. Tailor it to each role you apply for, you have time if you are on the bench, and follow up with a call to the recruiter. Although... don't call them 2 seconds after sending it because they can take a couple of mins to work through the job board system. Leave it about an hour.

Maybe teaching you to suck eggs but recruiters like CVs which are laid out simply (cue derogatory comments ) i.e. Job title, company, dates, job description. It sounds obvious but people send all sorts of weird CVs to try and get attention when it's the best written ones that prove to be winners. I.e. avoid using tables, columns, text boxes etc... The CV is really important, it is the only thing a hiring manager has when choosing who to interview or not, so it's essential to put a load of effort into it.

Also might be worth pinpointing some companies you know have your sort of role and send your CV in directly. If they use an agency then they will let you know and if they recruit directly then you will be on their radar for current/future roles.

I havent been in the game long and my skills are pretty generic, windows support, microsoft qualified etc.

Heading towards bench myself - however I'm seeing the demand a increase... which has me surprised.

What sector/skill do you specialise in?

Don't worry about the number of people applying for the jobs. Just make sure that your CV is well written.

I had 5 different CVs depending on the role I was applying for. Occasionally I would amend the closest matching CV to ensure it matched all the requirements in the role description.

Ive been on the bench for a few weeks now and cant get even an interview. Starting to get worried and lacking funds.
Does anyone have any pointers to find contracts in the current climate?
I run searches through the popular job boards but I can imagine the number of people applying through them leaves me little or no chance.
