Don't get in a tizz about this behaviour.
The Pope is Catholic; Rose Kennedy does own a black dress; and agents fish for leads.
Just tell them politely but firmly that you're sure they wouldn't give out their contacts, and neither will you.

Lets see who can get an agent onto Radio One!!!!!!!
However don't listen to Radio One as have a choice of better radio stations plus I'm too old.
Bet it would work for local radio as the DJ names are more obscure and the telephone number would be more realistic for the clients' area.

Tell them you haven't got the number to hand, and ask them to drop you an email and you'll get back to them.
Seems to work for them

Yep had quite a few fishing type of calls in the last 2-3 weeks, very annoying they spend 10-15 minutes interviewing for a fictional role, then they start asking me about my manager at when I was at that company, then my manager when I was on another company, when refusing to give the info they either disconnect without saying bye, or suddenly have another urgent call to attend to.

I accepted a contract today and the agent knew that i had taken this one and cancelled on another being offered to me.
Five minutes later he called back and asked who the company was - i asked him why and he point blank admitted it was because he was a recruitment agent and would give them a call to try and make a placement.
It was quite funny - i told him absolutely not, and we had a laugh about it. I even ran him through the 'was your manager at xxx a man called joe blogs? oh so who was it then?' line which he found hilarious when i said if i had a pound for every time i heard that line then i wouldnt need to contract.
It was a refreshing change to at least hear a pimp at least admitting their tactics for once.

When I used to work at the world's local bank I once told a pimp my line manager was John Bond and kindly gave him the number from the internal phone directory. The muppet didn't have a clue.

I always say to pimps that I can't provide references before interview
you can hear them cursing and slamming the phone.

better yet, give them a name of a very large company and a Mr Paul Smith (you get the idea)
Let them go crazy trying to find the right one.

When working for Eurotunnel some years back, I just gave the agents my line managers French number. He was quite delighted to feign having no English (like most French people in fact).

Strangely 2 agents got abusive and one guy had to tell me he was going to end the phone call "now" because I wouldn't give him my "line manager's" details.

Agent: Hi , your CV is great. I have about 10 positions that might suit you. Who have you been interviewing with ? What interviews do you have lined up ? I am asking because I don’t want to put you forward where you’ve been put. ( lol Yeah right you fecker - that is exactly your concern).
After I reply that I don’t have any interviews or I am not discussing this their immediate reply is : Ohh, so you have problems finding work , why is that ? Are you unsuccessful ?
The last line , their last hope that you will start defending your professional credibility by giving out details about your interviews, is pathetic.
At first I was being polite explaining my non-disclosure policy of this type of information , but I am fed up now and had the last to feckers hung up on me.
What are they thinking ? Every normal person will get the pattern after 2 -3 calls like that. ( I know - they don't care )
I am seriously considering coming up with some fake company / interview and have them waste their time , not mine.
