You're not comparing like with like. Freelances are anyone who, in effect, doesn't work for an employer and many of whom are on fairly low hourly rates. The bulk of IPSE's membership are what we here recognise as contractors, predominantly in IT and engineering, who are in the top 5% of earners. That is one of the problems IPSE faces, as I see it, which is the lack of recognition that there are many forms of freelance workers, including us.

From my own experience, my rates in today's market are around £650 a day, and I've been offered around £100k salary plus package not that long ago. There wouldn't be an awful lot of difference at the end of the day. And £40k a year coders aren't rare, equivalent to around £300 a day in terms of take home, and those rates aren't that rare either, outside the central London bubble.

Already planned tax changes and other factors will only erode the differential further. (There is a clear intent to get employed and self-employed taxes to be levelled out - and that despite lots of evidence that we actually contribute more than employees in terms of tax generated.)

Yes, I agree, actually (although in my case I went for the work, which was a challenge, rather than the money - which was also pleasantly higher than my last real job).

It doesn't take long for the big income to become normal, and the freedom from the corporate greasy pole climbers and pointless Human Remains staff rapidly takes over.

No, it's about the independence from corporate politics and HR nonsense.

Money is not a motivator, despite what many think, it's a comfort factor and/or an indicator of success. Also the real world gap between permie and contractor net income is rapidly closing.

My work includes a large section investigating individuals characteristic to determine motives into contracting. Although it may not appear relevant, it is still good use to me

    IT Contracting work

    Hi all,

I am currently doing my final year dissertation at Northumbria University surrounding UK based IT contracting and self-employment and require participants for an online survey. This should only take around 5-10 minutes.

If you are currently or have previously undertaken work as an IT contractor, consultant, freelancer or similar variation I would appreciate the help.

The survey url is: IT Contracting and Self-Employment Survey and will take you directly to google forms

    Thanks
