Indeed, constantly changing health and safety regs are a nightmare.
Hopefully, it will get better with Brexit, especially considering my 2nd job with Uber.

That's why I got out and the fact they could retro apply the law, I had enough of the worry even though I was confident I was outside of IR35, what's the point of having the extra £ if HMRC years down the line can try and claim it back and the law is on there side with no duty of care. When I started contracting years back everyone was jumping on the EBT / Loan schemes I know at least 5 people now who will lose everything because of these schemes, HMRC are so dangerous imo. I had a relative whose business tax affairs were reviewed we are talking a local business / shop the amount of crap HMRC gave her resulted her going into massive depression and needing treatment, in the end after 2 years investigation they found nothing.

So it a nut shell it was HMRC that made me sick of it, they are idiots, hopefully no one with touch public sector contracts with a barge poll now and I hope it hurts them a lot.

Sad but true. HMRC will kill you to claim their "fair share".

Just thinking about these 5 people you know, if they will lose everything to HMRC, why not just take all the cash and go blow it, or put it on a casino bet somewhere. Either way you're going to lose it, right? Then just declare yourself bankrupt and live off state handouts.

Not at all, I can see where you're coming from but I'm surprised it's a reason to give up on contracting.

My main beef with contracting has been the Banks I've been working for are not prepared to give significant responsibility to non-permie staff (regardless of how quickly they turn over their permie staff...). It's understandable, of course, but I find myself repeatedly working for people who just don't understand the business area or the subject matter in question, and that can be very frustrating.

The uncertainty niggles me a bit, but I guess 5 years without any time on the bench and never having to commute more than I did as a permie mean I shouldn't get too worked up about this.

Back on topic. I've worked at home approx. 50% of the time these past few years. Been an absolute joy to be at home when I like - I pretty much pick and choose my days - and then be able to go into the office to socialize (in a professional sense).

Anyway what happened to the OP. Hope Olly got over this hump.

I'm happy as well, working from my home. Sometimes I have to go to other countries but still best option. If you complain about money, maybe you shouldn't spend money on drugs and girls.
