Taxi from Manchester Piccadilly to my house is about £13-14 by private hire, £16-18 by black cab.

Used to fly into Edinburgh Airport and have someone waiting for me (I did try driving it, but it used to kill me 300 miles on a Monday Morning).
I suppose the benefit of this over a Taxi, was we had a form of contract and they'd invoice me monthly. Also, if my flight was delayed they would arrange for a driver to still be waiting for me and there was a greater deal of flexibility.
My suggestion would be to call round a few and ask. It was 42 miles from Airport to client site, worked out a lot cheaper than a taxi twice a week.
Oh and the flam was a Merc S-Class, bit better than a hackney carriage or similar.
Ill bet the permies had one or two things to say about you being chauffeured to the office on your first day.
