First past the post IS the death - basically wasted vote in most of places because people vote mostly for the party in this country.

I know you grew up in a country where voting was a ceremonial process, at best, but for those of us who take the concept of democracy seriously, it's not so "simples".Originally posted by AtW View PostDon't like the list - don't vote for it, simples.
Yes, I could refuse to vote, as could everyone else, but that's the death of democracy. #WhatWouldPutinWant...

And it's why so many European countries change their governments more often than you change your socks. It also removes the one cornerstone our system has: democratic accountability. You no longer vote for a Member of Parliament, you vote for a party. They then decide which of their candidates will be "an MP" for your region, and you can bet your arse it will be the candidate who has brown-nosed the best, and promised to vote with the party at all times and be a very good boy/girl/something in-between.Originally posted by Eirikur View PostBecause??
Because it's a successful and far more democratic way of voting in most other European countries?
It's more democratic for political parties, but far less democratic for the voters. And in a democracy, surely that's the point. The clue's in the name...

Scrap first past the post. It worked well in 1600's but not in 2019. Landowners don't govern the plebs anymore. Well expect for Swindon, no self respecting landowner would touch that place.

It is a matter of debate. Bengal famine of 1943 - Wikipedia History can't always provide a 'truth'.Originally posted by Whorty View PostMeh, facts are facts. Feel free to be as hypocritical and xenophobic as you like, but it doesn't detract from the reality that his actions and decisions had a direct impact on the lives of millions, many of whom died. What is true is that oPM understatated the number of deaths caused by Hitler (or alternatively crated a false comparison with the number of deaths caused by Mao, which favoured Hitler) and then disengaged from the conversation. Most peculiar. I wonder why.

This is just his latest attempt at moral self-flagellation, involving as it does a rather abstract extrapolation of the realities.
Best to just view him as a rather pathetic comedy figure. It works for most of us.
