I'm new to contracting. I've gone for the ltd company approach. I'm looking specifically for pension advice and generally advice how to get the most from my money as a contractor.

Don't forget you are not just a contractor, you are a director of a small company. Many IFA's will have considerable experience dealing with small companies so will know enough. I don't think our situation is unique to contractors only.

The guy I use from St James Place works near Durham but travels over to the north west to see me - may well cover Scotland as well, but I don't know.

Not a specialist in contractors, but knew plenty about how I work, IR35 etc. before I'd said very much.

If possible I like to be able to meet someone face to face at lest initially. It helps me feel confident we can work together successfully. However, I agree that i'd prefer a better performing IFA at a distance than a poor one locally.

Locality shouldn't come into it; I'd rather deal with somebody 50 miles away that offered better value for money than somebody half a mile away that doesn't know their arse from their elbow.

Why do you feel he has to be local? What exactly are you after? Morgtages? Life Insurance?
