On the avoiding inheritance tax end if you are about to remortgage at any stage you can get is down as co-ownership rather than joint ownership with your partner.
This means that you both own half the house rather than you both owning the whole house.
As half a house can not be sold or mortgaged. it has a legal value of £0.
Very quick win for lessening inheritance tax.
just bmy 2p worth

I have a will, I'm 30 and have had one for about 8 years, got my solicitor to draw one up, it did run to several pages, as its deals with family, children, investments etc. can't remember the price, but does the price really matter at least you know it is all legal and correct.
One thing to remember is to keep it up to date with your personal changes, not so much if you buy a new flat/house as an investment because things like these are covered as a group not separate items.

As pointed out elsewhere there are places to get DIY wills. However, personally, I would seek professional advice from a solicitor and get them to do it. The chances are they will save you far more (in IHT) than it actually costs through their knowledge and experience. I read a story a while ago that solicitors actually make more money out of untangling DIY wills after someones death than they do in actually writing wills in the first place. In all likelihood you'll be doing your heirs a big favour by getting it done professionally at the outset.

For people without a will, there is something else you need to be aware of.
If you have a partner and a young one.
If you die without a will, your partner does not get it all !. It is shared btw your partner and your young ones (i.e it is held in a trust for them)
This means that your partner might end up beign strapped for money cos its not all hers especially where majority of the inheritance is not liquid.
However in a strange way, this might be of benefit if you dont want your partner to spend all you "hard earned & died for" money on some new fancy lady/fella
2 days after you go under !

Can you point us all in the right direction for how to DIY, as google seem to suggest only paid will writing services? Thanks.

Hi,Originally posted by The Lone GunmanI have writen a Will.
Do it, it makes sense for all sorts of reasons and it is not particularly expensive. I understand it is reasonably easy to DIY.

Yes, and you are mad not to. The laws of inheritance if you die intestate are not at all what you (or common sense) might think.
