Craig says You'll need to file a tax return if you're a director, and to that you just register with HMRC via a form called an SA1. You don't get a letter as such, just a Unique Tax Reference, and then a reminder each year that they are expecting a return.
As NaT says, there's no connection between being self employed and being a director - they are two very different things.
