I dont like that I have to send my Company expenses to the accountant every month.

Is there an accountancy that will be accounting Company expenses without my help. I want them to go into my Online Banking web pages and check all expenses there. ?

There is actually an online accountancy firm which claims to have a unique link to a major UK bank so that expenses can be picked up by the software without all the proof sending!! However you have to bank with that bank of course!

You all want to spend less time on here moaning about everything!

Hopefully you have a separate bank account for your personal money and one for your business.

There are some good online apps arround for Professional Contractors and Freelancers. FreeAgent , you enter you expenses yourself and also upload bank transactions, some matching can be done automatically, but even those that are not will not take you very long once you get the hang of it.

Your accountant should be able to see the accounts too, if you give them access. You could also choose to work with an accountant who includes the application within their fees.

That way you give the accountant all the info they need to advise you, and you retain all the documentation.

Its probably more efficient for both the accountant and client if you dont have a business bank account with lots of individual expenses payments, but claim expenses from your company on a regular basis and make an expense payment. Its much tidier.

But if you have more accountring entries , for example if you sell something transactionally , you would start to think about different accountancy ..

If you sell something transactionally, just send him the transaction sheet (PDQ?)

why does your accountant need this information every month?

For VAT he needs it quarterly.

If you do your own VAT, then he only needs it annually.

Sheets in "Google docs" might be a good way of sharing info with your accountant.

Actually, I can't imagine that what you want can't be provided by an accountant if you are prepared to pay for it. I think a lot of self employed types with no IT knowledge just dump all their invoices and receipts in a shoe box and the accountant sorts it. They should be prepared to do as much or as little as the client wants.

Seriously, how are they supposed to know what you actually bought from a one-line bank statement entry!?

My idea is that it is stupid to be doing work which the accountant should be doing.

They should:

1. Have access to the online banking pages.
2. Have access to an email account where all receipts are sent to by either yourself or the companies that have invoiced you. ( we are talking company expenses only ).
3. If they cannot match invoice to an entry on the bank statement they should email you asking you what that is.


I guess the current system with major accountants is is ok for contractors with 30 or less accounting items every month.

Just tell your accountant that you won't be bothering with sending them your receipts and that you will be taking out your expenses without proof. Tell them that HMRC won't investigate you because you are an honest guy. And don't forget to add a few quid on your expense claim, nobody will notice. Go on... do it... And remember, we didn't suggest this idea to you.

What you want is an umbrella with "special dispensation" where they charge max expenses for you every day.

A search for "umbrella" and "dispensation" and "HMRC" on this site will find you some companies that do just that and some feedback about them too.

Even if you put everything through the business account how would debit card or cheque payments have meaningful descriptions they could use to distinguish business from personal expenses or personal drawings? Do you really want to give a third party your UID/pwd to let them do it?
