    No you don't and as the work would probably be outside the scope of UK VAT (but do check) I don't believe it counts towards your turnover for VAT registration threshold purposes either.

    If I work for a client in the EU, but am based in the UK and do not need to pay VAT since my company's income was below the threshold, do I still need to have a VAT number?
