Surprised Receipt Bank hasn't been mentioned yet - really nice mobile app + OCR to spreadsheet / API to your software of choice.

How did you get on with it? Considering subscribing.Originally posted by pjclarke View PostTo answer my own question, I have downloaded something called Expensify, which seems to be the answer. Enter the amount date, category etc and take a pic of the receipt. End of the month, generate a report, transfer to SJD sheet and archive. Paperless, once you have the scan. I'll give it a trial and report back, if anyone's interested ....
Looked also at Concur, which turns out to be for corporates, and requires opening a paid account, Shoebox, which describes itself as free but needs a subscription after the free trial expires and a couple others that were too rigid (e.g. no way to change the currency from $).

Sorry I thought you meant entertainment isn't a legitimate business expense and so isn't worth claiming.Originally posted by TheCyclingProgrammer View PostOk, anything is claimable, of course.
What I did mean was not allowable for tax relief. Obviously.
It is both of those.

Are scanned expenses that much easier to fake than hard copies? Receipt printers aren't expensive.Originally posted by PerfectStorm View PostThat's actually quite a serious point... there must be people making up all sorts of bollocks expenses!

Scanned Receipts are easy to fake these days

I also use Evernote although I'm not really convinced it's the best tool for the job. It does OCR if you have a premium account but so does the software that came with my portable scanner.Originally posted by robpow View PostI use Evernote for this, it's great because it OCRs the image so you can search for texts on the receipt.

Some are, although with mixed results I'm sure.Originally posted by PerfectStorm View PostI don't see what the point of an app would be - you need to enter what the thing is, the date and the amount - presumably it's not smart enough to glean that from a receipt automatically?
No you don't. Scans are all you need. You're free to bin the originals. There are very few things HMRC require originals of these days. They have a list on their website of what you need to keep originals of. Receipts is not one of them. And as has been said, you need to keep the real ones for 5 years anyway.
This has been the case for years now.
The most notable thing you need to keep originals of is dividend vouchers although it's worth noting that if the original format was a PDF then that's all you need. You don't need to print them.Last edited by TheCyclingProgrammer; 28 July 2014, 19:18.
