Barrett 50 Cal fired into a swimming pool

    50 Caliber Sniper - Video

So, all in all, it's shotgun slugs* & handguns* that have greater range in water.

    *Subsonic.

In the prog they started with a 10 foot deep acrylic tank.

The 9mm glock slug hit the bottom.

The 12 gauge shotgun slug obliterated the tank.

None of the supersonic bullets did much in the swimming pool.

    Then again, there's:

YouTube - Obliterating a Fish In A Barrel: Mythbusters

However, since they seem to disintegrate within about a foot, the supersonic thing is a bit academic really.

That barrett seems to make quite a bang.

    Though the mini-gun is fun.

Must cost a bit in ammo.

    *smaller cross section too.

Blame it on the fact that water can't be compressed.

They won't be. The speed that sound travels through water is 1482 m/s (5335 km/h; 3315 mph)

      Dependent on temperature etc...

I'd like to fly a Warthog - its gun can stop the plane.

So, to cut long story short - if you see someone aiming at you from 50 cal high powered rifle then quickly jump into water to save yerself?

But considering a 12.7mm shell won't penetrate 1 foot of water without breaking up it stands to reason that 30mm of rapid fire fecking hell won't go through a puddle no mater how noisy it is.

But thinking about it seriously, the .50 cal is probably designed to disintegrate on impact, hence the big feck off hole it leaves.
Science isn't about why, it's about why not. You ask: why is so much of our science dangerous? I say: why not marry safe science if you love it so much. In fact, why not invent a special safety door that won't hit you in the butt on the way out, because you are fired. - Cave Johnson

Er. That's against the Geneva Convention, old chap.

                    Strongly disapproved of.
