His grandparents practically brought him up (mum is, shall we say, not maternal). I'd not seen him for 10 years or so - but will always just remember him from those innocent days before teenage years, which is probably the best way.
My dad had to announce it at church on Sunday morning, as they moved from the area a few years back. All incredibly sad - particularly as they'd just also had a 50th anniversary party that week.
