I've worked at current clientco before and have a really good relationship with.

Whenever I've been benched or thinking about a moving in the past, a little email to them sounds them out and they are prepared to offer me something

Indeed, it's always good to keep in touch with certain people.

Most of my work is direct for exactly that reason.
