Some googling reveals that my MacBook will hopefully be easy to resuscitate
Apparently there's a know problem where occasionally, if you've mucked about with the power saving settings for the display, the power management unit can get confused about which parts of the system are sleeping. I mucked about with exactly those settings just the other day.
As the display was working, it was just the backlight; and as, at power up, the backlight comes on momentarily then immediately switches off, it seems unlikely to be the other alternative - a hardware failure - so a bit of ditzing around resetting some parts of the system should see it right
And of course, being a Mac, there's a readily available and simple operation to reset said settings, even when you can't see the display
