Apparently not any more... I'd actually got into the habit of typing "carp" to save the back end regexps a bit of work

I wonder if it now turns "carp" into "crap"

The whole naughty words business is one of the things I looked into at ClientCorp (now ExClientCorp) when I wasn't overly busy... the intranet gave one access to all kinds of interesting work by geniuses beyond our ken, and the bug database ("This is rude in Argentina" - invented example, but close to reality) could, if one worked out where to look, be even more interesting

Identifying naughty words, phrases and expressions is inordinately complex even if you restrict the problem domain to one language.

Once you start to generalise beyond a specific locale or culture...

Let's just say that regexps won't get you anywhere.

And anyway, why is "crap" such a bad word?

My mum (whom God preserve) doesn't use it, but despite her obvious merits, she's scarcely a bellwether for online communities. I can't think of a single person of my acquaintance, including my mum, who might find the word offensive.

And she got used to the word "prat" pretty quickly, even when she thought it was offensive, back in the 80s

I remember going out of the house and looking up at the moon, knowing that there were people walking around up there.

You can never know what that felt like unless you lived in those days.

For me, it's still one of the defining moments of my entire existence: I was able to look at the moon, knowing that, at that very moment, people just like me were there.

Nothing you've ever experienced comes close to the wonder of knowing that even as you look at that other, tiny world, there are people walking on it - the only people ever to walk on ground that isn't the Earth.

I feel sorry for those of you who were born too late for that. You'll never know how that felt.

I got to this post last night and realised it was time to go to bed because I understood it perfectly.

                My head hurts. Oooh!

So much for me managing to open two industries most days last week (one at the hotel and one at ClientCorp).

I thought it was going to be kept at the docks if it failed its MOT?
