I need to get out of the festive habit of watching films midweek; they keep me up far too late

Anyway, tonight was Con Air (1997), which is good, but I reckon film studies students could make a meal out of comparing the (spoiler alert) plane crash scene in Las Vegas with modern films of the same ilk, as they seemed to be able to get away with a lot more nonsensical stuff back then compared to now, when a generation raised on IMDb "Goofs" pages spots anything untoward straight away. For example, as the plane slides past the Oasis casino, a huge fireball erupts towards the entrance of the place. I may not have been observing closely enough, but I didn't see any reason why this might have happened, other than to allow a shot of panicked bystanders fleeing in terror from a fireball with the Oasis sign prominently in shot. Whatever is supposed to have happened, it had no effect on the progress of the plane or the film whatsoever. Anyway, all good clean fun.

And then Death Wish (2018), which as the date would suggest is the recent remake. It's perfectly fine, as remakes go; I thought they did quite a decent job of transposing the circumstances of the original to a more recent context. For example (yes, another one), having the daughter committed to a psychiatric institution because of PTSD wouldn't really work nowadays, when most such places have rightly turned into venues for urban exploration, and PTSD is recognised as a treatable medical condition, which it apparently wasn't when the first one was made and "then she's shipped off to an institution" was seen as a perfectly normal way of dealing with a traumatised young woman. Worth a watch, if you fancy that kind of thing.

The bedroom has warmed up to a more reasonable 16°C by now

There's a lovely lady who has worked there for 30 years pairing socks. I was very much reassured.

Dry and overcast-ish this morning. Weather app says its haze, which I guess is a reasonable description. Currently 1 degree and a high of 2 could be achieved later. Less sunny than yesterday but still unlikely to have any precipitation. Barometer down to 1016 mBar.
