In case the code is badly written, it rolls over to -32767 posts (as Nick says above) and the system deletes all the posts.

That was what happened to the PM's "public forum" on the Number 10 website a few years ago. They'd got some numpty in to write a DLL in Visual Basic which handled the data storage, and (s)he used a signed int (which is 16 bits twos-complement in VB) for the post count.

When post 32768 came along, it rolled over to -32768, because it was signed. Even better, the system then said "Oh, look, all these posts have numbers greater than the current post count; they must be garbage data", and deleted the lot

Cue one empty "public forum"
