Bit of a tulipty day today.

Woke up knowing that I'd picked up a cold
Next time I'll need to try getting a bottle of that First Defence stuff - has anyone experience of it?

And then had to go and stand in the cold at the funeral of CovUncle. Poor chap was only 66 - cancer got him within a couple of months of it being picked up. Not a nice day really.

The bloody cemetary chapel was freezing - we could all see our breath in there.

I was once on a Sunday evening train that stopped there, and sat there for ages. Finally the guard came on the Tannoy and explained that the driver who'd brought us from Birmingham had to knock off because he'd reached his hours for the day, and the driver who was supposed to take over had misread the rota and had gone to Birmingham New Street instead. As a result, we were going to be stuck there for about forty-five minutes until the next train arrived with the driver. He ended his announcement with the words "Once again we apologise for this delay, which is due solely to the incompetence of the other driver."

Loads of people started tutting and got up to head down to the poor guard and harangue him, even though it clearly wasn't his fault and there wasn't anything he could do. I gave it a few minutes as they all drifted back to their seats, still tutting, then headed down there myself. As I got there the last couple of tutters were just starting to head back with faces like thunder, and he'd just started to go to the door of the cabin to hide himself away while he still could.

      I said "Excuse me!"

In the words of Hunter S Thompson, "He sagged like an animal taking a bullet". He turned wearily to me, saying "Yes sir?"

I said "As we're going to be here for a while, is it OK if I leave the station and go to the pub over the road for a pint? The bloke on the barrier will be all right with that, won't he? It seems like a better idea than just sitting here."

He cheered right up, and I could see he was thinking "Finally, somebody with a bit of sense" as he assured me that would be fine

The pub turned out to be pretty cool, decorated with psychedelic posters of Hendrix and such, and the ale was good. And that was my only visit to Nuneaton

I believe Scourer mentioned using First Defence yesterday? Or something like that.

          Thanks.

Yes, I reckon it was him. I did a bit of Googling on it but opinions seem mixed hence asking for experiences.

Too late I have a cold already and I'm hallucinating.

Tuesday night: crown pub by the station is £1.95 a pint, followed by the crossed chukri's (sp?). Ace stuff.

Other than that I am in full agreement..

That was the pub I went in while we waited for the Incompetent Train Driver

I use first defence - I have no idea whether it actually works or not, but worth a go.

My lamb shanks are finally cooking

I've quite gone to town on this recipe; hope it turns out nicely. I even bought a leek, which I don't recall having ever done before!

There was a nice lamb, leek and lentil (pffft) recipe on that patronising 'eat well' website. It was yummy, must dig it out again.
