        The bell thing is tricky to judge. Some people interpret your polite "ding" as a "Get out of my way" and get quite arsey. I usually ring when I'm a good distance away to afford time to look round and plan to stick to one side well before I pass. It's the people with dogs that are clueless - many will call their dog just as you get there ensuring said mutt is running under your front wheel.
