Still getting a slight burning smell off the old Dyson, but it ran for a minute or two without actually putting out any wisps of smoke this time, and it seems to be picking up better than it did, so I'm going to wait an hour and, if it's not reduced itself to a molten blob, call it fixed

It can be the belt slipping on the roller. I ruined a hoover once because of this. If it is this, I heartily recommend a new belt.
