Is google particularly slow, or is it just me?

    Comment

I had the chattiest (male) optician yesterday.

Once he'd found out I was an engineer, we covered all sorts of subjects, such as the V2, dear old Wernher, the axial flow turbine in the ME262, the centrifugal compressor of the competing engine in the Meteor, and other stuff like that.

In between we tested my eyes.

Which can be corrected to 20-20, apparently.

Which doesn't really account for the recent discomfort, but there you go.

Oh yes, we also discussed the superior armament of the ME109, with its 30mm cannon versus the Spitfire & Hurricane with their puny 303 mgs.

But at least I can touch type now.
30 second rule! Or 1 second if you have a furry friend. Warm spot detector in place.

Hard to say - one of the parcels that came today was my Alcatel Y800 WiFi hotspot thingy, so I've been mucking about trying to get that set up despite EE's execrable instructions and shamefully poor website

Back on the real connection now and… hang on… nope, usual speed for me

I google something, then get a blank page 'untitled' then the results appear some considerable time later.

Weird. Have you tried turning off JS so it defaults to normal browser HTTP rather than all that Ajaxy autocomplete gubbins? You might get an error page that gives you an idea what's happening.

Or maybe have a look at the HTTP traffic in dev tools, or fire up something like Charles or Fiddler?

(I sometimes suspect it's my background in assembly language that makes me likely to suggest starting at the lowest level by looking at raw HTTP in response to virtually any web problem. Luckily it pays off frequently enough.)

Um.......Zeity.... the curious reader might wish to understand how your being an engineer led to a discussion of some of the foremost technical achievements of 1930's/40's Germany. Was this a previously un-suspected SS franchise barbers, or were you wearing your 'best uniform' again?

Incidently, i'm currently reading Gross Admiral Doenitz's account of proceedings. The first 150 pages of his memoirs could be summarised in 4 words: 'I ******* told you so'. Still, we've only got to mid 1941 so there's plenty of fun to come yet. Especially when he's in charge of the whole reich. All 40 square miles of it. I liked this armstrong and miller skit on that subject:

Nope, haven't done any troubleshooting whatsoever, apart from killing all the chrome processes. Will reboot tonight and see if that sorts it out.
