I remember reading a comparative review of different brands of baked beans in the late 70s or early 80s. The Woolworths own-brand ones (actually labelled Woolco, but that was the Woolworths own-brand label) got quite a high score, because they included a touch of malt vinegar in the sauce and it added a certain something to the flavour. Upon reading this I tried adding a touch of malt vinegar to my beans, and do you know they were right? Since then I've continued to use Heinz Beans (which are always the best by any criteria) but I always add a drop or two of malt vinegar (also known as vinegar, not those fancy vinegars) and it does improve the lifestyle experience
In fact, one of the major problems I have with hotel breakfasts is that there's never any vinegar put out with the cruets, so one can't flavour up the beans. You'd think for the amount they charge they could put a bit of Sarson's out
