I'm going to have an interesting conversation with clientco manager this afternoon. Think it might come as a bit of a shock to him that I'm thinking of leaving.

No major ones, but enough small ones to add up.

Too many wrong decisions being made for the wrong reasons rather than changing things and doing them right. I offer them my advice (as a supposed expert) and they ignore it and go ahead and do something stupid. Then it comes back to bite them a few weeks or months later and I have to fix it, when it could have just been done properly in the first place.

Probably the worst testers I've ever had to deal with. Bad enough that I've suggested outsourcing to India rather than using this lot

Not really working with any new tech as they're so far behind and require such extensive security testing on any new stuff that I'm starting to worry about de-skilling.

Some of that they can fix, some they can't. Mind you, I'd be prepared to overlook most of that if the next extension has a decent rate increase, but I can't see that happening.

If I find a contract that doesn't do that, I'll let you know.
            • I told them that they needed to bounce a component weekly to avoid any potential problems. There are no problems yet, but leaving it connected for two years isn't a good idea.
            • I explained that this is what Oracle recommends.
            • I was told "we don't do that - if we try to bounce it and it doesn't come back up then that's a problem".
            • I told them that they are the only people I've worked with who don't do it.
            • I was told "we haven't got scripts to do that".
            • I explained that it's done via a web-page and you configure it to stop and start.
            • I was told "we don't do it for anyone else, so we don't for this system. If we bounce it, it might not come back up."
            • I explained it was best practice and Oracle's advice is to do it.
            • They did nothing.
            • Today, they got issues because it's not been bounced.
            • It's my problem now to fix it

I had an agent ring me twice this week for a local permie role. I pointed out that the technology was out of date seven years ago when I put it in, and it can't be upgraded so would need a new implementation from scratch.

Is there much else out there, or are you just going to have a hungover summer (again)?

                    Wouldn't mind one

The market seems pretty good at the moment judging by calls and emails I'm getting but it's hard to tell if you haven't actually been looking. I haven't updated my CV in about a year and a half so if I'm getting plenty of interest at the moment I'm confident I should find something with an updated one.
