I like my eeePC 701 (early adopter!) but reformatted it and put eeebuntu on there instead of the crappy OS it comes with.

I guess it depends on exactly what he wants to do with it (although I can guess what most boys, with unlimited internet access, want to do with it once they get to a certain age!)

Samsung NC10 (O/S - XP) - excellent little device. Runs Office, Visio, Project, etc.

Not tried for development though.

Get the 2GB upgrade straight away.
