    Pretty identical I would imagine.

That's my default position on all technical matters.
Where are we going? And what’s with this hand basket?

I wonder how long it'll be before we need longlonglongs...

I've spent my career working with 16 bit ints if I'm lucky...

          Greetings from the hotel

Bloody Premier Inn use a different wi-fi provider here, rendering my existing credit with the other provider useless

The 3 thingy is also having problems - it connects but fails to authorise, which usually means there are too many users for 3's useless network to handle

Still, I'm here and it's a sunny evening - I think I'll have a shower, then pop down to the pub for some dinner. There'll probably be some of the conference crowd there so I can say hello to a few people before heading over the river to the real pub in Covent Garden

...and quite frankly, it doesn't get any weirder than tonight

I wandered down to the pub suggested as a pre-conference meeting place, but it was full of suits and people wearing the kind of casual clothing that they're allowed to wear instead of suits at ITV just over the road

So I abandoned that idea and hied myself to the pub, where I achieved a record (or at least a personal best) in having all four of the bar staff crying "Nick! You're back! How are you?" in the space of thirty seconds (or so)

And so the long night dragged on, as I sat at the corner of the bar reading the paper. Near closing time, the crowd had thinned sufficiently that a bunch of the real regulars and I had found each other, and started catching up; it turned out none of our lives had changed very much

During this process I'd caught a glimpse of somebody dithering outside. She then decided to enter. She was clearly drunk, and wanted to know if they were still serving.

                "Molly!" I cried, waving

The look on Molly Holzschlag's face as she tried to work out who it was and how they knew her was hilarious... she staggered over and leaned on my shoulder. "How do you know me!"

                "It's NickFitz" I laughed.

"Oh wow... what are you doing here? How did this happen? Why is it I go into a bar in a city thousands of miles away from home and you're there?"

"Because this is where I drink" I replied

Anyway, as the good ladies of the Harp were trying to get rid of us anyway I drained my pint and escorted her to the pavement, where we met the rest of her cohort who'd just caught up with her, such as Bruce Lawson and that chap from the publishers APress/Friends of Ed whose name I keep on forgetting

It turned out that Opera has accommodated their cohort in the Charing Cross Hotel, so we all finished up in the bar there (extortionate prices BTW). Molly spent much of the remaining time asking me (repeatedly) how on earth the Universe had arranged itself such that we met again under such random circumstances.

Bruce and others decided to excuse themselves after one drink. I finally left her, her young gentleman friend and Opera colleague (I think he's a colleague of hers at Opera, but anyway I definitely remember him from other conferences), and a random Scotsman that nobody knew (but who seemed to be quite knowledgeable about the web, and who I also recognise from other conferences) to their devices - and now I really should get to bed, having stayed up a couple of hours later than I intended

Still, it was nice to catch up with that lot on a social basis (if that's what they're calling a "rampantly drunken basis" this season) before the conference
