I think I'll knock up a little PIC16F84 ap that exercises the PCF8574N chips first.

Then move on to the 24lc64 eeprom.

I wonder if it's the eeprom that his code can't cope with... or the addressing is wrong.

As long as they arn't herring gulls you're safe. Herring Gulls are nasty buggers, they take no prisoners when there is food involved.

Absolutely correct. there are no recorded and verified instances of Herring Gulls taking prisoners.
