It's not often people praise the services of someone like BT, yet they are often quick to shoot them down.

So in this instance. From me to BT it's a

Have you considered not looking up and looking down so much?

Avoiding such places as Trafalgar Square and the rim of the Grand Canyon might help you to get used to this curtailment of your usual activities.

Although it would obviously be better if you could look up and down, for there is much to be seen there. Today I went from gazing at the cumuli above to gazing at the manhole cover below, and wondering why the manhole cover manufacturer had cast their fax number in it - seriously, the cold hard metal says

                    FAX 441234567890

                    - well, not that number, but it does have the International Country Code "44" at the start

I assume that the proud manufacturers will end up, for the next fifty years (or whatever the lifespan of manhole covers is), being the last company in the world that has to keep a fax machine going, just in case anybody gets curious about one of their manhole covers

I was reading something in The Grauniad tonight about Kent Police admitting that inappropriately threatening announcements had been made over the Tannoy from the helicopter during a recent protest.

It instantly brought back Summer Solstice at Stonehenge 1988

After sending the lads in riot gear in to do things like throw a woman on crutches to the ground and kick her in the head, they withdrew briefly and the chopper started saying "Unless the crowd disperses immediately to the Countess Roundabout, Officers will move amongst you to make further arrests."

I've always had a great appreciation for the Constabulary's capacity for euphemism since then - "Rush at you in riot gear, throw you face down on the field and stamp on your head" is better described as "Move amongst you", it seems

The really weird thing was that these commands weren't even coming from the helicopter: as I was trudging up the road at the Stonehenge apex, I realised that the voice from the helicopter was coming from a senior copper about six feet away, talking into a radio in the back of a Police Transit. Due to the speed of sound and the helicopter being up in the air, there was a slight delay, but he wasn't just relaying what to say: it was him, bellowing orders from the sky, yet without any clear view of the overall situation or activity on the ground

And to return to VF's point: scary to think that was nearly 21 years ago
